Silky Oaks in good company

Silky Oaks Lodge has joined some of the nation's elite accommodation providers with its inclusion into Luxury Lodges of Australia.

Famous for hosting the famous, Silky Oaks Lodge director Paul Van Min (pictured) said he and wife, Barbara, have reinvested $3 million into upgrading the facilities since taking over the property in 2009.

"It was part of the five-year plan that we wanted to take Silky Oaks from where it was, it was a touch tired when we took over in 2009, and the plan was to really build up a luxury lodge.

"It was a five-year plan with constant investment and to reposition it for future growth when the market starts to return, and it's showing signs of that."

Mr Van Min described Silky Oaks Lodge's inclusion into the exclusive club as "a bit of a coup."

"The criteria is that it has to be a special experience, it has to be an exquisite property, the food has to be absolutely five-star, there has to be walks, there has to be a national park aspect. We ticked a lot of those boxes already.

"They're very tough in their membership, more than 20 properties were rejected last year. It really had to fit that criteria and meet their very high international standards. We're very proud that we have achieved that."

Silky Oaks Lodge was a hive of activity last Thursday as a swarm of local tradespeople worked feverishly to complete a "long list" of upgrades in time for the re-opening the following day.

Mr Van Min said tourists in the high-end market have traditionally overlooked Australia as a luxury destination, preferring to travel to places such as Africa. However, that appears to be changing as Tourism Australia begin to market our very own luxury experiences.

"We have managed 15 per cent growth every year, and our forward bookings are looking very good for next year.

"We are starting to attract a lot of luxury business again and simply because I think Silky Oaks has re-established itself in the marketplace domestically and internationally. There is confidence back in the product.

"With the leverage of being associated with the very top-end properties of the country, that's never going to hurt is it?"

Silky Oaks Lodge now sits alongside seventeen other Luxury Lodges of Australia members including famous names such as Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island, Lizard Island and Qualia.
