Port Douglas First Wives Club

Marriage breakdowns can be one of life's most traumatic experiences, but an initiative by two locals means women going through a separation don't need to go it alone.

The Port Douglas First Wives Club will meet for the first time at the Port Douglas Yacht Club this Thursday at 6pm, and will bring women together to share their experiences and help others cope with the unknown future of divorce.

One of the organisers of the Club, Andrea Gibson, said meeting others who are, or have been, in similar situations can relieve the pressure of relying on immediate networks of friends and family.

"I was worried about talking to my friends about my problems all the time. The main thing was there was nobody I could phone up to ask a silly question," Andrea said.

"I thought it would be great if I knew someone who has been through what I'm about to go through.

"Sometimes your friends don't understand how obsessed you get in that situation, and you don't want to chase all your friends away."

Andrea said a number of women had been in contact with her to ask for advice, which prompted her to establish the Club.

"Come and meet women in your situation, tell your story, ask questions of each other make new friendships and gain valuable strength and support. You might find you have already been through something that can help someone else," she said.

It is anticipated the Club will meet once a month. If you'd like to get involved call Andrea on 0418 909 818 or Lisa on 0429 894 635. Children are welcome.
