Port a tasty carrot
The future of the conference and incentives market in the region is looking bright, and efforts are being made to improve on the $30 million currently injected into the local economy each year by visiting companies.
Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree executive officer Doug Ryan said operators had seen an increase in enquires as companies looked for inspiring new products to reward and incentivise employees.
He said products in demand included the $20 million Mossman Gorge Centre, which opened in June last year.
“Where else can you experience the pristine Daintree World Heritage Rainforest, all the while getting lost in the dreamtime legends of the local KuKu Yalanji community on one of their special guided walks?” Mr Ryan said.
He added that Port Douglas resort, QT, has spent $6 million on a makeover that was proving a hit for this market, particularly now that work has been completed on its new conference facilities.
“The investment made through QT, Mossman Gorge and now Flames of the Forest has seen a lot more enquiry and we will see an increased number of delegates in 2014/2015.”
Natalie Johnson, sales manager for Port Douglas attraction, Flames of the Forest, said upgrades to the rainforest venue marked its 10th anniversary celebrations.
Ms Johnson, who also chairs Port Douglas Incentives, described the Port Douglas and Daintree region as a “dream when it comes to creating spectacular off-site events”.
“The stunning, natural beauty of this region has always attracted the conference and incentive market. Taking people out of their everyday lives into such beauty and relaxation is often inspiring – something that conferences look to achieve – and helps their delegates reach their full potential,” she said.

Other products, which are also proving popular for team building exercises include Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas and Botanical Ark, a private botanical garden with more than 3000 species of plants.
Mr Ryan said the average daily spend of incentive and conference delegates, per person, is in excess of $554 per day, or per trip $3526.
Companies who have visited the region recently include Telstra, Young Presidents Organization and brewing giant, Lion Nathan.
