Leaders abound at Mossman Primary

A group of students at Mossman Primary School have been given the honour of being named school captains for 2013.

It's part of a broader leadership program that fosters valuable qualities such as community spirit, honesty, persistence, resilience, and of course, leadership.

Mossman Primary School Principal, Vicki Sparks, said a large number of Year 7 students have taken up the leadership challenge.

"They have made a commitment to the school that they are going to be leaders for the school. They sign off on a form for me that says they're going to be role models, that they'll help in the playground with the younger children, and that they'll do 25 hours of voluntary service to the school community across the year."

According to Vicki, this service to the school "is limited only by their imagination."

"It could be that they're listening to younger students read before school, they're organising ball games and activities for students at lunch time, some kids like to do gardening around the school grounds.

"It's stuff that will make the school better that they're doing in their own time," she said.

Four school captains have been chosen who will represent the school at a variety of community events such as ANZAC Day commemorations, along with their duties within the school.

Zoe Cambieras, Jasmine Kirk, Jye Hauser, and Kaleesha Savage (pictured with Vicki), have been recognised by their fellow students and will work hard to uphold the values of the Mossman Primary School in 2013.

"These students were elected by their peers and the staff at the school...The students heard what their ideas and goals are for the school for this year.

"During this year they'll also participate in some further leadership development through the Tinaroo Environmental Ed Centre. They’ll go to leadership camp which will foster those skills," Vicki said.

The captains of the school's sports houses of Jardine, Kennedy, and Leichhardt have also committed to the school's leadership program.
