Hot competition at Rifle Range

Saturday saw a good turnout of keen competitors with a few visitors also. On the range was very warm and humidity was very high, even with our marquees set up we were sweltering.

First to compete in the F Class (mechanically supported, telescoped 308) comp was Norbert Schmidt. Norbert opened with a 5 and a 6. He cut the 5 and went on to shoot a perfect score of 60 Bulls eyes with 4 dead centres (about the size of a 50 cent piece).

Next up was Gus Gusmeroli in the F Class comp. Gus opened with a pair of 2s, he cut them and then went on to shoot a mixed bag of 4s, 5s and 6s to post a first round score of 47 from 60 in the ten shot match.

Jascha Gusmeroli was back at the range after a long break shooting in the F Class comp. Jascha opened with a 4 and a 5, he cut the 4 and went on to shoot some very impressive scores considering he has not shot in nearly five months. He posted a score of 53 out of 60.

Steve Cruickshank also made an appearance being absent from the range for quite a while due to a nagging wrist injury. Steve opened with a 2 and a 4, he cut them then went on to squeeze off a bullseye and then went downhill from there, posting a first round score of 48 out of 60.

Next on the range was our Captain of the Club, Neil Attwood, shooting in the Full Bore (308 Manually supported, peep sights/open sights) comp. Neil opened with a double 5 which he kept and went on to shoot a heap of 4s and 5s with a 2 sneaking in to post a score of 44 from a possible 50 in the first 10 shot match.

Ron Schild was next on the mound in the Full Bore comp. Ron opened with a 3 and a 5. He cut the 3 and went on to shoot a below average score of 37 out of a possible 50.

Norbert Schmidt was back on the range for his second 300 metre match in the F Class comp. Norbert opened with a 6 and a 5 as sighters which he cut, and then went on to squeeze off a string of 6s and 5s to post a score of 61 from a possible 66.

Gus Gusmeroli was back for his second attempt at hitting the very small target at 300 metres in the F Class comp. Gus opened with a pair of 4s. He cut them and went on to shoot a really mixed bag of scores giving him a second range score of 47 out of a possible 66 in the 11 shot match.

Jascha Gusmeroli was again on the mound for his second range. Jascha opened with a 4 and a 5, cutting the 4 he went on to squeeze off a near replica of the first round with a score of 56 from a possible 66.

Steve Cruickshank decided he was just wasting his ammo so he quit while he was ahead.

Neil Attwood was back for his second round in the Full Bore 11 shot match. Neil opened with a 4 and a 5, he cut the 4 and went on to shoot a mixed bag of 3s , 4s and 5s for a final score of 48 out of 55.

Ron Schild was up next in the Full Bore comp. Ron opened with a 3 and a 4, cutting them both, he went on to shoot a very low score of 38 from a possible 55.

We had the pleasure of letting three novice shooters have a go at both categories. First on the mound was Chris Wilson shooting in the F Class division using Jascha’s 308 scoped rifle. Chris opened with a 5, another 5, a 6, and two more 5s. He was happy with that result.

Then a junior shooter, Cody Powell, was keen to have a go also behind Jascha’s rifle. Cody shouldered the 308 and squeezed off a 3 and he was happy too.

Rachelle Powell was on the mound behind the Club’s 308 Full Bore rifle. Rachelle was tutored by Neil Attwood for 10 minutes before lining up the small target through the peep sights which is usually a difficult task for a first time shooter.

Rachelle enjoyed the experience and was rewarded by hitting the target a few times. Rachelle and her son Cody have signed up as new members to the Club.

In summary, we had a good, relaxing shoot in what was a very testing day due to the high humidity and lack of any breeze.

Norbert Schmidt took out honours in the F Class Comp with a total double range score of 121/4 out of a possible 126 followed by Jascha Gusmeroli with 109 and Gus Gusmeroli posting a score of 94.

Steve Cruickshank failed to post a second range score.

Neil Attwood took out honours in the Full Bore Comp, posting a double range score of 92 from a possible 105 with Ron Schild in second with 75.

We welcome anyone to come along and have a go at this very relaxing and challenging sport of target shooting. The range is signposted half way between Port Douglas and Mossman on the Captain Cook Highway and we shoot every Saturday starting at 1pm.
