Four letters, and they don't spell LOVE
The Taipans had it back to front this round as they did the job on the road against the Kings and were beaten at home by the 36ers.
Let’s perhaps put it in perspective. The win against Sydney was against an injury ravaged club who just lost their main playmaker (Corin Henry) and the loss against Adelaide was one that gives coaches sleepless nights as it was in the bag!
Sydney lost their ‘Jamar Wilson’ type quarterback to a season ending injury last week after the cut-off date where replacements are allowed. Tough break indeed (could Shane Heal suit up again?).
Adelaide are up there with the most talented squad assembled this season but had only won once in the last 10 outings. I guess they were due and it was unfortunately against us.
We had Adelaide by 22 at one stage and were 9 up with 3 minutes to go. Now one can argue that having less than 24 hours to back up is a joke (a Sunday game would have made more sense for the second leg no doubt), but I have four letters to say about our Snakes – S.O.F.T!
After Saturday’s debacle Fearny said some very true words. He was reported as saying; "Ah, we're soft, It's been there for a majority of this season. There's this underbelly with us. I'm not going to hide it, it's there. Good teams have that great killer instinct”.
Yep, well-spoken coach, and let’s hope it hits home – no pro athletes like being called SOFT! You guys were three minutes from keeping the dream alive with two wins from the round and the knee came off the throat!
The other factor is that these games are now only 40 minutes duration so fatigue shouldn’t be a problem. It’s a bit like getting the record marlin all the way to the boat and it slips away at the final moment.
Fearney has certainly seen the ups and downs of his trade in his five-year tenure and I back him to continue learning and getting better. There is definitely now no tomorrow so no more losses and we must hope other results go our way.
It starts with those plucky Crocs on Friday night who are also licking their wounds from the weekend.
Here we go...
Round 20
Perth vs Melb – Wildcats by 8
Gong vs Adelaide – Gong by 8
Cairns vs TV – Cairns by 8
Sydney vs Perth – Perth by (you guessed it) 8.
