First T20 a thriller

Port’s first ever local T20 cricket match got underway under lights just after 7pm last Friday to a small crowd of supporters.

The two teams were captained by U16 club members Kaiden Sorensen and Ethan McCullough who picked balanced sides known informally as 'Kaiden’s Killers' and 'McCullough’s Maulers'.

The Maulers batted first, Shepherd in devastating form with 37 off 21, before being stumped off Taylor. His partner Gillie, lathered in sweat, continued to make 22 off 26.

Butters managed a quick 11 including the third six of the innings to bring newcomer Ben G from Port Douglas Primary School to the crease who was very strong on the leg side. He impressed all senior players who quickly spoke to Ben’s wife to try and sign him up as he managed 32no.

Damo (2) was caught by his former Muddies' skipper who then also ran out fellow team mate H. D’Adonna (5), followed by the wicket of his father A D’Adonna, also run out but without facing a ball.

This brought the talented youngster Tom Goodall to the crease, raising the seniors’ eyebrows with shots easily equal to the best played in the match to finish with 16no of 16 balls and the team total at 6/139.

Peter Shrimpton took bowling honours with 2-6 as every player bowled at least one over.

The Killers started their innings equally as well, losing their first wicket S Evans (33) to Darlington with the score on 53. But it was the partnership of Ben V and Ben S that propelled the team toward a close finish.

Ben V was eventually out for 27 and Ben S unfortunately run out short of his half century on 48. Nick managed 17 off 11 balls including the winning run with a mere two balls to spare.

The teams agreed the lights were “good enough” and the event, used as a tester, is confirmed to return later in the year. There is a strong likelihood a short four to six week, four team social competition may be made available to anyone who wishes to participate.

The Douglas Cricket Association Muddies will work toward this over the off-season and promote it perhaps late August.
