EXCLUSIVE - Rise Of The Underdog

Maya Weidner, the Mossman film producer who earned recognition for her award winning documentary Betty Shanks: The Wilston Murder, now has her sights set on a feature length film.

Maya and her team recently raised $12,500 to produce a gripping trailer which will now be thrust in front of potential investors in a bid to turn the trailer into a movie.

The trailer, which she produced alongside director Mack Lindon, is called 'Rise Of The Underdog' and depicts the harrowing ordeal of a young male nurse accused of rape after a night out with friends.

It was launched last Wednesday at a Gold Coast Independent Filmmakers evening, and has since had well over 4,000 views on YouTube.

Chillingly, the story is based on real life events.

"I learnt about the case in the middle of last year. The director said it was a bit close to his heart and was a story he knew about," Maya told The Newsport.

"It was a story that came out of Melbourne, but we are filming it entirely up in Queensland.

"We're trying to take the story and make it our own. It's such as sensitive topic with rape...

"The pitch for this is kind of like The Castle meets Candy, two Australian films. It's a bit intense...but we're trying to make it a little light-hearted and we're trying not to make it specifically about the situation with the girl and guy involved," she said.

Maya added that the script has instigated a number of discussions about the grey areas in such a case.

"When it comes down to a woman's word versus a man's word, no one can tell whether he did it.

"The whole thing about this (film) is Andy, the main character, he's not just some bloke you'd expect to be dodgy around women, he's a nurse, he's a good kind of guy, and what happens when it comes down to a girl saying 'he raped me'..."

Maya hopes that, should the project attract the investment it needs, she may land a production assistant role, a big step forward in her fledgling career after recently graduating from Queensland University of Technology.

"For me that would be pretty amazing. I'm only 20 so already it's been a good project to get off the runway."

The trailer stars Ben Taylor (Sea Patrol) and Martin Sacks (Blue Heelers). It is hoped filming the feature length 'Rise Of The Underdog' will begin on 1 November this year.
