Caught on camera

Police are appealing for information to identify a man caught on film stealing and destroying 'Vote NO to de-amalgamation' signs under the cover of darkness.

The man, seen in this footage provided to The Newsport by Port Douglas Police, allegedly took action against the People Of Douglas campaign to remain amalgamated on two occasions, once on 13 February, and again on 16 February. On each occasion the acts were committed just prior to midnight.

The offence of stealing carries a maximum penalty of years five imprisonment.

The controversial signs, which include a prominent billboard on the Captain Cook Highway, have drawn the ire of some readers in what is becoming an increasingly heated debate.
