Last chance for charity brainstrain

Put your thinking caps on and head to Port Douglas' Central Hotel tonight for the last K-Star Charity Trivia for 2013, with all proceeds to benefit local non-profit The Clink Theatre.

The eight groups to benefit from Central’s monthly charity trivia events earlier this year have shared close to $15,000, thanks to generous participants and Central Hotel’s $500 donation per charity.

The Clink was officially opened in 1992 as a theatre, a far cry from its original purpose as Mossman’s Courthouse Cell block.

For over 20 years, the independent Douglas Theatre Arts Group (DTAG) has called The Clink home, with the ever-evolving troupe producing, writing, directing and acting in over 250 productions.

“Everything we make from a production goes back into the theatre,” said DTAG President, Freida Wilson.

Ms Wilson said DTAG will put funds raised this evening towards restoration of the theatre.

“We need a lot of maintenance; expanding and replacing, and better sound and lighting equipment,” she said.

Quizmaster Kevin ‘K-Star’ Eldridge is urging charities and non-profits to get in early and secure one of 12 spots available next year.

K-Star started hosting trivia at Central two years ago, though 2013 was the first for monthly charity editions. Nine charities have benefited so far this year, including animal rescue shelter Paws and Claws, Womens and Street Children's Home (WASH) in Nepal, and marine health initiative Tangaroa Blue.

Doors open at 6.30pm tonight at the Central, with Round 1 kicking off at 7pm. Suggested entry is $10 per person for teams of 10 or more.
