Atherton too strong for U12 Muddies

A little tired from the previous nights T20, the Muddies U12s travelled to Morrow park on Saturday where they came up against the in-form side in the competition, Atherton 2.
The Atherton eleven were too strong for the Muddies on the day, coming away with the win 155 to 128.
Atherton started strongly taking 31 runs from opening bowlers Vincent Killeen and Ryan Stanaway. First change bowler Nick Raynor bowled economically taking 0 for 8 from his 3 overs while Connor White took the bowling honours for the day with figures of 1 for 6 from 3 overs. Scott Cooper bowled 2 sharp overs while debutant Charlie Dowling showed great promise with some well directed pace.
Luke Twomey was delivering his usual thunder bolts that were fast enough to have Mitchell Johnson worried about his spot for the next test. First season players Bailey Elliot, Abel Terry, and Liam Clatcherty all bowled well against the more experienced Atherton team along with Lachie Dowling who took 1 for 10 from his 3 overs.
With a steep run chase ahead, captain Lachie Dowling and Bailey took to the field. Bailey was unlucky to be out without scoring and was shortly followed by Abel. When Scott followed the next ball it looked as though the Muddies might have been in for an early finish. Connor fell a short time later to a catch worthy of the KFC classic catches competition which then saw Charlie make his batting debut. Not for the first time in cricketing history, there were now brothers at the crease. Lachie and Charlie faced 40 balls between them before Lachie was bowled on the last ball before he was due to retire.
Luke Twomey then joined Charlie steadying the innings and making 15 before retiring. When Charlie retired not-out in his first game, Ryan Stanaway came to the crease blasting 8 off the first over he faced, before being bowled 2 overs later for 11 off 12. Adding to the list of retirees in the shed was Liam who was not-out on 8. As the last 2 batsmen in, Nick and Vincent saw out the remainder of the innings making 24 and 15 respectively. Both boys batted well against the greatly respected spin bowling of Smahardi Baker from Atherton.
The boys are looking forward to hosting Atherton 1 this week in the final match before a well earned break over Christmas.
U14s claim nailbiting win over Innisfail
The Under 14 Muddies played Innisfail Monsoons for the second half of a 2 dayer at the Port Douglas Mudpit on Saturday 30 November.
Returning from the first day of the match, Muddies were on 7/93 and Innisfail 5/64. Muddies batsmen Daniel Davidson and Reuben Allison returned to the crease with 32 overs to bat out. The pair batted out two overs until Reuben was bowled on 11.
Next batter was Josh Edwards, who faced four balls before being bowled for no runs. Tex McDowall was the eleventh batter and together, he and Daniel made a fantastic partnership batting for 13 overs, until Tex was also unluckily bowled. Twelfth man Raine Sorensen was also bowled, leaving Daniel not out on 38 runs. Muddies ended their innings on 11/132.
Best batting for Muddies for the 2-day match were Daniel (not out on 38), Levi (20) runs, Reuben (11), and Nathan (9). Most improved batter of the week was Tex (5).
It was time for Innisfail to return to the crease to make a very possible 68 runs from 34 overs. The Muddies knew they would need to bowl tight, to keep the opposition from passing their score.
Opening bowlers Daniel and Nathan kept the opposition at only 4 more runs after 4 overs. Reuben and Brayden bowled first drop letting only 7 more runs on to the running total. Curtis and Tex finished their overs with Innisfail on 5/88.
It was spin bowler Keel Sorensen who took the first wicket for Muddies from two maidens bowling with his brother Raine 0/5. After Finn, Ryan and Josh bowled their overs, the score was 6/104. At the 59th, Innisfail were pushing for runs when Curtis White took a fantastic direct run out, followed by another run out 3 overs later by Tex, assisted by wicketkeeper Brayden, to have Innisfail at 8/119 at 62 overs.
With two overs remaining, the opposition needed 14 to win. Muddies bowlers Keel and Curtis kept it tight, with Innisfail finishing on 8/123 at the final 64 overs ,with Muddies taking their second win of the season by just 9 runs.
Best bowling stats for the match were Keel 2/4 off 8 with 5 maidens, Finn 2/4 off 4, Daniel 1/9 off 8; Reuben 1/10 off 7 and Nathan 0/3 off 7 with 5 maidens.
Next weekend the team will travel to Tolga to play two T20 matches.
