First local Daffodil Day lunch

Cancer Council Queensland Mossman and Port Douglas volunteer branch is calling on locals to support the region's inaugural Daffodil Day luncheon on Saturday, August 17.

The group of passionate volunteers will host the luncheon in the lead up to Daffodil Day, Friday, August 23, in a bid to help turn the town yellow this month. "This is the first time that we have held a Daffodil Day Lunch and we are very excited about it," said said Branch Secretary and Treasurer Raelene McDonald. “We wanted to hold a luncheon to help raise money and continue the fight against cancer – and the response so far has been so enthusiastic.”

Cancer Council Queensland Regional Fundraising Coordinator Berni McKean encouraged locals to head along to the luncheon in support of Daffodil Day. “It is going to be a lot of fun as the community comes together over a meal – and supports the one in two Queenslanders affected by cancer in their lifetime,” she said.

Hosted by local identity Nicky G, guests will enjoy a 3-course meal at On The Inlet restaurant, and a complimetary glass of wine on arrival. Prizes will be auctioned throughout the event, and include donations from On the Inlet, Splish Splash, Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort, The Hair Shop, Tshinta, Hibiscus Resort & Spa, The Habitat, Mossman Golf Club, Harrisons, Palmers Sea Reef Golf and many more. Regional Fundraising Co-ordinator Berni McKean will speak briefly about Daffodil Day, to be held this year on August 23, and the importance of fundraising to help Cancer Council Queensland continue their work.

Across the state, Daffodil Day helps grow hope for better treatments, hope for more survivors, and hope for a brighter, cancer free future – and in Mossman it’s no different. Cancer Council hopes to raise $1.9 million across the state this Daffodil Day, to help fund vital cancer research, prevention programs and support services and on August 23, Mossman and Port Douglas Branch volunteers will put up a stand at Woolworths, Mossman from 9am-5pm with fresh daffodils and merchandise for sale. The volunteers will also push a wheelbarrow of daffodils around Mossman and Port Douglas, giving local shops and businesses the chance to brighten the lives of Queenslanders affected by cancer. “Keep an eye out for us as we visit businesses on Daffodil Day in Mossman and Port Douglas – with our bright yellow wigs we will be hard to be missed,” Ms McDonald said.
