Mossman-Port Douglas continued their strong home form to end Edmonton Storm’s winning streak with a hard-fought 25-20 win in their Bendigo Bank CDRL A Grade clash at Mossman Showground on Saturday night.

An outstanding individual two-try display from experienced Sharks player-coach Darryl Lightning inspired Mossman to victory.

Further tries to half-back Bronson Ryan and youngster Merv Missionary helped the hosts, along with Lyle Murgha’s boot, with four goals and a vital drop goal late in the game.

Ryan said the Sharks had gained a huge amount of confidence from the game, tipping Edmonton, who were on a three-game winning run, for an end-of-season top five spot.

“It was a great result for us, and I’m proud of the boys for what they achieved,” Ryan said.

“Darryl’s leadership was simply outstanding, and he is helping the boys achieve their best, both as individuals and as a team.

“The main thing this year for us is consistency – we started well last year but tapered off, and we don’t want the same thing to happen again.

“Our biggest problem is our away form, but if we can snare a couple of away wins, we’ll be in good shape, as our home form is great.

“I’m also really proud of the younger boys who stood up at the end against the Storm under intense pressure – guys like Merv Missionary were superb.

“The talent is definitely here in the Mossman region. We’ve just got to get the players believing in themselves, and if they do that, I think we can challenge for a top five spot.”

The result gave Mossman their third win of the season to move them up to seventh in the ladder, while Edmonton now lie one place behind the Sharks.
