Sharks smash Tully's unbeaten run

Tully Tigers lost their 100 per cent record in the Bendigo Bank CDRL A Grade season when they suffered a 30-22 defeat at Mossman-Port Douglas in a tight encounter at Mossman Showgrounds on Saturday night.

Both sides scored five tries each but it was the boot of Sharks' halfback Lyle Murgha that got the hosts across the line, converting all of his side’s tries.

Tigers coach Leon Hallie said his inexperienced side would learn from the weekend’s defeat which left Tully third in the ladder.

“We just made too many errors in the second half, but we certainly had the opportunities to win the game,” he said.

“The boys have been going really well in our first couple of games, but this was a good lesson in understanding how to play away from home.

“I think most sides in the competition are strong at home, as shown by Mossman, but we need to learn how to do it on the road.

“We need to have that same determination.

“We were also a bit sluggish after our bye, but that shouldn’t be an excuse.”

Mareeba celebrated their biggest win of the season when they edged reigning premiers Brothers 24-22 in a Stan Williams Park classic.

Gladiators stars Tonga Kose, Dwayne Williams, Paul Alofi and Eddie Tokarahi scored the visitors’ tries, as Brothers lost their first game since Round 17 last year.

Edmonton Storm were also in a celebratory mood as they secured their first win of 2013 when lock Jarrad Tatipata scored a dramatic winning try two minutes from time to edge Innisfail Leprechauns 30-26 at Callendar Park on Saturday night.

In Sunday’s games, Ivanhoes clinched their third win of the year with an impressive 42-32 win over Yarrabah at Jilara Oval, a result which leaves the hosts rock bottom while the Knights move up to fifth spot on points difference.

Meanwhile, leaders Kangaroos continued their faultless start to 2013 with a 42-20 win over winless Atherton at Vico Oval.

The Roos, who have won four of out four to sit alone at the top of the ladder, were thankful to a hat-trick from centre Alan Ingui, while Ricky Barba (2), Robbie Amber, Ethan Gallop and Northern Pride Academy U18s star Sam Pau also crossed the line in a dominant win.

Southern Suburbs had a bye.
