Gymnasts star in district comp

On Saturday the Mossman and District Gymnastics Club had nine of their finest gymnasts compete against clubs from Atherton, Mareeba, Barron Valley, Southside Cairns, Malanda and Townsville for the 2013 Barron Valley Gymnastics Club Intra Club Competition.

At least 230 gymnasts, both boys and girls representing the FNQ Region displayed great strength and poise over the two days, showing the months of hard work and discipline they’ve put in.

Our girls were well rewarded for their efforts, along with their families and coaches.

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) Level One, 7 years and under - Remy Leo did extremely well being her second competition coming first on Bars and third on Floor and receiving sixth overall out of 17 girls.

From WAG Level One, 7 years and over, Charlotte Henderson reached a great accomplishment in her first competition. She excelled in all apparatus, getting first place on Vault, Bars and Beam. She also received second on Floor, being awarded first overall out of six girls.

Rosa Johnson also did extremely well also participating in her first competition. Although fighting nerves, she managed second on Vault and fourth on Bars.

From WAG Level 2, Over 8 years, Kahli Frizelle showed her talents getting first on Vault and third on Floor receiving sixth overall out of 14 Girls.

From WAG Level 3, 9 years and under, Tali Hoye did extremely well against the fierce competition placing 15th out of 20 girls.

From WAG Level 3, 9 years and over, Shayla Frizelle showed great dedication and strength, coming second on Bars and second on Beam, receiving second overall out of 31 Girls. Shayla was competing against gymnasts up to three years older than her and the session was a very strong and close competition, with the first 10 places not even having two points difference.

Paulina Bernhardi came third on Beam and seventh on Floor, receiving sixth overall out of 31 girls. Della Miller came 17th and Jorja Harvey came 22nd out of 31 Girls.

All girls gained exposure, experience and a hunger to fine tune their skills in preparation for a few more competitions in the coming months.

“Overall I am very happy with the results, especially for our younger ones having such a great outcome for their first or second comp," coach Sonja said. "It was great seeing so much excitement and happy faces - I think they cannot wait for the next one.

"For the older ones, it was a mixture of great success and gaining more comp experience at different clubs with different apparatus set up and much more. Sometimes it takes a bit too much chalk or just a different kind of beat board for a bars routine or a vault jump to go wrong. All we can do is to give our upcoming gymnasts as much competition experience as possible.”

For anyone wanting enrol their children, we are offering free trial sessions. Gymnastics is a great sport for building self-confidence and self-esteem and a great way to get into an after school activity at an early age, as it is a sound foundation for any other sports our children might encounter later in life.

Girl’s beginners classes are running on Tuesday afternoons at 3.30pm and 4.30pm, boy’s beginner’s classes are on Friday afternoons from 3.30pm.

Our little ones don’t have to miss out either - Kindergym classes are run on Saturday mornings between 9am and 11am for the ages 0 to 5 years.
