Cairns entrenches 'gateway' claim
Cairns Regional Council is planning to erect a sign recognising Cairns as the 'Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef' at the entrance to the Marlin Marina.
It's a move that is sure to raise the ire of those who believe Port Douglas has rightful claim to the title, with many locals believing Cairns has fleeced the town of the brand.
A proposal to place the sign at the Esplanade Lagoon was considered a safety risk and was not consistent with the existing aesthetic components.
Ports North has been approached regarding the potential placement of the sign.
