Tri-Port makes a splash
Triathlon in Port Douglas is going from strength to strength after another successful running of the Tri-Port Triathlon on Saturday.
Hundreds of competitors including around 40 local athletes took part, but it was professional Matty White who took the honours in a time of 4:11:02 in a sprint home against rival and close friend Tim Berkel.
Todd Spackman took third two-and-a-half minutes later, while a contented Nick Carling was the first local across the line in a time of 4:47:21, earning him a top ten finish taking ninth place beating home Cairns-based foes Nathan Sandford and Gary Bryant.
"It was awesome. It was more about the time for me but it was cool to be the first local home and beat my rivals from Cairns.
"We always have a really good battle but it was good to pick them up on the day."
Rebecca Hoschke excelled and was the first women home and seventh overall in a time of 4:35:50, Kym Jaenke was 15 minutes behind taking second place while Laura Whenmouth scored a podium finish taking third in a time of 5:47:25.
Local triathlete Chelsea Mee crossed the line in seventh in a time of 6:24:22.
Carling said he has noticed an increase in the popularity of the sport in the Douglas region in recent years, and the area has caught the eye of many professionals, some of whom are choosing Port Douglas as a base for a two-week training camp in November.
"They love the place, love the surroundings, and they were really happy with what Cairns Crocs produced on the day."
