Scrum on down

The 2012 Junior Rugby Union season began on August 30 with boys from 7 to 16 and girls from 7 to 12 years of age able to scrum on down or just ruck up to join in the fun.

Training, which is held in Mossman each Tuesday and Thursday from 5pm, will continue over the school holidays as we prepare for our first game on Friday 12 October.

The Junior Raiders joined the CDJRU competition in 2006. In our first year we won the two premierships that we entered in the Under 10 Under 12 competition. Since then, we have won one premiership each year.

In 2010 and 2011, our club was bolstered with support in the older grades with players travelling down from Mareeba. In 2010, 11 boys from the Junior Raiders were selected to attend Tieri at the Queensland Country Muster, with one making the shadow side for Queensland Bushrangers.

In 2011, 17 boys were selected to play for Cairns Storm in Tieri. Lachlan Cowe was selected into the Queensland Country Bushrangers Under 13 team.

2012 saw a much more successful year with 11 players selected into the Cairns Storm side and five of these boys selected into the Queensland Country Bushrangers team to compete at the State Championships in Toowoomba over the school holidays.

The Reef Raiders are very proud of Matthew Chesterfield and Tom Allen in the Under 13s, Fraser Cotton and Quinlyn Cannon in Under 14s and Aidan Chesterfield in the Under 16s.
