Run Marathons - Week 18
The last 50 or so years has seen some dramatic shifts in footwear. From thin soled, leather wrapped shoes to extreme levels of absorption we’ve seen it all.
Feet are not just structures that hold you upright. Every time contact is made with the floor a cascade of neurological events is set off allowing for balance and correct muscle firing. The ability to feel the floor is vital in this process.
In the mid 1900’s the concept arose of trying to soften the soles of shoes to decrease injury. This lead to a flood of thick soled, shock absorbing shoes onto the market.
Research has shown the result of this to be an increased rate of injury. There are many theories behind why this has occurred but one of the most important reasons is the lack of firing of these neurological mechanisms as the thicker sole has meant an inability to feel the floor.
Thankfully this has now been acknowledged and most good footwear companies are producing what is known as “racing “flats”. These are runners that no longer have an elevated heel and tend to have a thin responsive sole that allows the foot to feel the contact surface.
ASICS has a great shoe in the Piranha, but all your top companies now create versions of racing flats.
Using thin-soled, racing flats with great technique is the best way to ensure you lessen your chance of injury through running.
