Paddy's take A Grade Pool honours
The 2012 Grand Finals of the Pool competition took place at the Port Douglas Yacht Club on Sunday in front of a large crowd of supporters drawn from all the league teams around town.
Before the game commenced the A Grade final was billed as a fascinating contest between two teams who had beaten each other during the regular season but on current form it was arguably recognised that The Port Douglas Yacht Club team were going in on the day as the favourites over Paddy's Bar.
As is so often the case in grand finals of any sport the favourites succumb to the pressure of the label, and in front of the biggest crowd of the season the trophy appeared to have Paddy's Bar written all over it.
From the opening frame, the Yacht Club were playing catch up going two matches down after some positive play by the underdogs before Steve Hughes stopped the charge and got the Yacht Club on the scoreboard.
The relief was short lived with Paddy's keeping their momentum going taking the next two matches leaving Chris Shields with a do or die match to keep the Yacht Club in the game going into the doubles rounds.
Under intense pressure against an expectant crowd he succeeded bringing the score back to 4-2 with the doubles matches to come.
As the atmosphere became high voltage the Paddy's Bar duo piled on the pressure and the match was decided after a tense 'cat and mouse' final few balls. Paddy's Bar emerged victorious 5 - 2.
Earlier in the afternoon Barrier Reef Tavern I had been crowned B Grade winners.
