Inside Port - Who is Cab Saveloy?

by David Breit

On a recent Tuesday afternoon 'Cab Saveloy' came to the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre to entertain our Friendship Group.

Who is Cab Saveloy?

Cab is a one man band, a player of various instruments, a comedian and a character. Cab Saveloy (also known as Phil McNamara) comes from a long line of Saveloys (Boom Boom!).

He enthralled his audience with his own compositions including 'The light on the river runs red and gold' accompanied by his guitar, 'The cry of the curlew' accompanied by a rather large saw (Cab calls it cutting edge music) and ‘I sang for my supper but the hunger returned' accompanied by his rather unique harmonica.

It was all good, very good. Cab may be described as a troubadour. Cab composes songs of love, politics and morality.

He hails from Daylesford in Victoria and has taken a Winter break to enjoy Port Douglas and busk on Macrossan Street, and has been spotted playing for the PM, whom he entertained with a piece dedicated to her (She loved it).

Cab has lived his life.

He fell in love on the Greek Islands at a very young age. At the age of 18 he lived in Germany where he started his career busking. Music is his church and home.

Cab camps on the banks of the River where he fishes writes and enjoys life.

Every Tuesday the Friendship Group meet at the Neighbourhood Centre between 1pm and 3pm. It is always entertaining and varied. Everyone is welcome so just come along. You will be welcome.
