Healthy reminder at Expo

For some the Health and Wellbeing Expo held at the Port Douglas Community Centre on Wednesday was a healthy reminder to spend a little more time looking after ourselves, and those close to us.

Dozens of stall holders, from breast screening services and dementia support to community garden project workers and local charity Kids In Need of Donations, were spruiking the importance of a healthy lifestyle and healthy community.

"We want to educate people about sedentary lifestyles," said Renna Sayed from Actin Fitness.

"It's not just about fitness, it's also about nutrition and a holistic approach to wellbeing and just improving your lifestyle with your family."

"Just from being here (in Port Douglas) six months now I think there is quite a lively atmosphere in terms of riding, swimming, running, people want to change their lifestyle.

"It is a positive direction that they're going in, but there's always room for improvement."

Karen Warburton from health services organisation Chronic Disease Management Cairns said the statistics of chronic disease in Australia paint a bleak picture.

"7 million Australians have at least one chronic disease, there are 60 new cases of diabetes in Queensland every day, one in three Australians are overweight or obese...we teach patients to take control of their health."

MC for the event, former Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre Manager Mandy Stone, summed up the purpose of the Expo.

"The importance of a day like today is all the groups come together from across the Shire and promote their activities and their services around health."
