Grand Final action in Junior DNA

Douglas Junior Netball hosted its Grand Finals on Tuesday, and the 12/Under Grand Final was played between the Diamonds and the Poison Apples.

The Diamonds went in favourites with a very strong win rate all year, but the Apples hit the court running shooting 10 goals to 6 in the first half. The game was played with gusto, and both teams shone, displaying fantastic netball with plenty of intercepts, brilliant passing and court positioning.

The game drew every bit of skill from both sides.  The Diamonds outshot the Apples in the second half by 2 goals but they could not get back the strong start the Apples piled on.

The Apples defied the odds with a 18-16 victory. Well done both teams for a fantastic game to watch. Standout players were Sascha Lowenstein-Jones, Ella Dodds, Bonnie Francis and Aleesha Viola.

The 13/under Grand Final was played between the 12/Under Rep team and the Breakers The Breakers brought in some helpers as they did not have a full side to play the Reps, which made an entertaining game for the parents and families watching.

The Reps continued in their fine form with some very slick passing and court work, and they took hold of the game from the start. The Breakers took the game right up to the Reps, but just fell away by 2 goals at full time with the Reps taking the game 7-5.  Best players were Piper Adams, Keeley Harold, Lucy Webster and Georgia Duncan.

The 14-16/Under Grand Final was played between old rivals the Dynamite and the Vipers. What a brilliant game of netball! Both teams were out to take the honours from the first siren.

The Vipers struck Dynamite shooting a 5-1 first quarter, but Dynamite exploded in the next quarter outscoring the Vipers and then matched them in the third quarter. By the fourth they took the sting out of the Vipers shooting 6 goals to 3.

The game was a nail-biter from the start and didn't disappoint. By the final siren the game ended in a draw and extra time was played with 5 minutes at each end.

Both teams battled to get to their respective goals again it was goal for goal until the Vipers, with some great shooting and brilliant defence got over the line by 2.

Final score 18-16.  Best players were Tayler Durie, Jess Eagle-Rowe, Eleisha Mealing, Brydie Tregea and player of the match Saisha Schonenberger.  What a fantastic final to end a successful season.

The Douglas Junior Netball Presentation will be held on the first Saturday after the September school holidays.

Thank you to all the Coaches, Team Managers, Umpires, Parents and helpers for your contributions to the Douglas competition, without you all it could not happen.

Special thanks to Sun Palm Express and Coral Reef coaches for very kindly donating a bus each to transport the players from school to netball every Tuesday, to Kerri Williams and John Stevenson for our healthy canteen every week, Kath Baxter, timer extraordinaire, and Lynne Kinrade - Umpire Convenor for a very successful learner umpire program.

Overall, Douglas Junior Netball has enjoyed a very successful season of Netball which culminated in a fantastic Grand Final series. Well done to all players and thanks to all of the players and supporters.
