Dragons storm into grand final

The Verri Industries Douglas United Dragons are one game away from capping off an unbelievable season with the Far North Premier League title.

The Dragons beat minor premiers Marlin Coast 2-0 on Saturday night to earn their place in the grand final on the 15th of September. Goals from Ian Marsh and Ollie Moffat secured the win that sent the travelling Dragons faithful into raptures.

The match started in a similar vein to other contests between the two sides with Marlin Coast dominating possession for long periods of the game without being hugely threatening.

The Dragons defence were able to limit them to long range efforts at goal which Gary Fitzgerald was able to deal with in the same manner as he has done all year.

On thirteen minutes the Dragons made Marlin Coast pay for their wayward shooting when Ollie Moffat’s deep cross found Matty Smith whose shot crashed back off the post and into the path of Ian Marsh who made no mistake in guiding the rebound into the back of the net.

The Dragons were again made to defend for long periods after taking the lead but again kept the opposition to long-range efforts although Ciaran Lemon did clear one effort off the line.

The Dragons made it to half time with their lead in tact, giving them the belief to go on with the job. The match followed a similar pattern in the second half with Marlin Coast enjoying long spells of pressure, winning numerous corners, but not being overly threatening.

Again they were made to pay by the Dragons and this time in some style. Nick Tither’s important clearing headed was picked up by Ollie Moffat thirty yards from goal with Moffat then shrugging off a defender and lashing an unstoppable, swerving shot into the far corner of the net.

It was a lead that the Dragons were not going to surrender and although Marlin Coast threw men forward in search of a way back into the game it was all in vain as the Dragons hung on to secure their place in the grand final.

The Paddy’s Bar Man of the Match went to Ollie Moffat who was outstanding throughout the match. Ian Marsh worked tirelessly up front as usual and Gary Fitzgerald was outstanding in goal as well, picking up a nasty gash in the process that required fifteen stitches and both would have been worthy of the Man of the Match award.

The Grand Final will be played at Endeavour Park on Saturday the 15th of September so make sure you are there to help bring the trophy back to Port for the first time!
