Cystic Fibrosis walk tomorrow

A sea of red reflected the community support for those impacted by Cystic Fibrosis in 2011, and organisers of the Great Strides Walkathon are hoping to see a similar turnout for tomorrow's event.

LJ Hooker is the nationwide sponsor of Cystic Fibrosis raising much needed funds for research.

"We would love to break all the records this year," said LJ Hooker Port Douglas' Kathy Williamson. "I think last year we raised over $10,000 and we'd love to be able to match that.

"We have several local families that have children that suffer from Cystic Fibrosis," she said.

This year, the fundraiser is being held in conjunction with Nigel Reed who lost his 11 year old daughter, Zoe, to the illness.

Nigel has since undertaken the mammoth task of walking around the world to raise funds and awareness of Cystic Fibrosis – a promise he made to Zoe because he wanted to see something positive come out of his daughter’s life.

To date, Nigel has walked 17,500km’s.  This year he starts one of the final legs of his journey - Port Douglas to Brisbane.

In 2013 Nigel hopes to walk through New Zealand and then in 2015 hopes to replicate the World Walk travelling from England through Canada and back to Australia.

The 4.2km Great Strides Walkathon 2012 starts at ANZAC Park in Port Douglas at 8am (registration between 7am and 7.45am). There'll be raffles, prizes, and a sausage sizzle as extra incentive to get your walking shoes on.
