Almost a month after the attack on a 30 year-old Port Douglas man in Macrossan Street was caught on camera, Police have finally arrested the suspect and charges have been laid.

The Newsport was made aware that CCTV footage clearly showed the suspect, a 30 year-old Cairns man whose name has not been released, hitting the victim causing skull fractures and bleeding on the brain.

The victim's head hit the pavement rendering him unconscious and he was taken by ambulance to Mossman Hospital and later transferred to Cairns Base Hospital where he received treatment for three days.

The arrest was made by Police last Friday and one charge of Assault Occasioning Bodily Harm was laid and will be heard at Mossman Magistrates Court on 10 October.

Mossman CIB Senior Constable Paul Tulacz said that Police had given the man every opportunity to turn himself in prior to the arrest.

"I was hoping he was going to turn up here and he failed to turn up. We only have one option when that occurs and that's to arrest and charge," he said.

The alleged offender has a history of violence with a prior conviction arising from an incident described by Senior Constable Tulacz as "exactly the same."

He was on probation at the time of this latest assault.

Senior Constable Tulacz reminded people the serious consequences of such acts which can leave victims with lifelong injuries and mental health issues, or worse.

"It's not the punch that will kill, it's hitting the concrete and the complainant in this matter was unconscious at the time of hitting the concrete.

"There's a very fine line between being unconscious and not waking up," he said.
