Assault caught on camera
The spotlight has again been placed on the necessity for government funded CCTV cameras to be installed in Port Douglas after a late night incident left a man with skull fractures and bleeding on the brain.
Camera footage from a Macrossan Street licensed venue captured the moment when the 30 year old Port Douglas man was king hit at around 2am on Sunday 26 August.
The victim's head hit the pavement rendering him unconscious and he was taken by ambulance to Mossman Hospital and later transferred to Cairns Base Hospital to receive treatment for two small fractures of the skull and a brain contusion. He remained in hospital for three days.
The man is likely to make a full recovery from his physical injuries, however, as highlighted by SBS' Insight program 'Punch Drunk' the mental scarring of assault victims can often take much longer to heal.
"It's just a very serious assault. When you view the video footage it's a perfect example of one punch can kill." Senior Constable Paul Tulacz from Mossman CIB said.

Police are confident that, based on the clarity of the video footage, the alleged offender will be brought in for questioning and charges will be laid.
Senior Constable Tulacz echoed calls from Port Douglas Officer-in-Charge Sergeant Damian Meadows saying CCTV footage is both a deterrent to potential offenders and a useful tool in identifying suspects.
"The more CCTV the better...CCTV, especially around licensed venues, is a must.
"The CCTV footage, that's what solves this thing," he said in relation to the latest incident. He added that in Port Douglas cameras should be placed along Macrossan, Grant, and Warner Streets.
In January this year a similar incident left Matthew Manns with a badly broken jaw. Mr Manns has since moved from Port Douglas to Victoria while the court case of alleged offender Tristan Bowen has been referred to the Cairns District Court.
Nearly 100 people signed a Queensland Parliament petition initiated by The Newsport earlier this year calling for more CCTV camera facilities in Port Douglas.
