'Go big!' G tells Taipans

The Taipans, after fiscally saving the club, have a glass only half full as they are now struggling to win any games.

It’s been a great effort to bring the club back from the brink of bankruptcy and then almost win the whole thing two seasons ago, but now the club has a new crisis.

The pre-season drive had all the boxes ticked but with sport and personnel the theory can often do a back flip in reality.

We know Fearney can coach and we know these guys can all play so what’s the problem? The great Andrew Gaze may have hit the nail on the head after Round 1 when he labelled the Snakes ‘too small to win it all.’

Boasting three guys 6 foot 11 is hardly small right? Yep, because none of them play the 5 (centre position).

It’s a similar situation to watching a ruck rover trying to ruck all day – he may get a few hit outs but will struggle to win the war.

Now the Townsville Crocs just snared 7 foot 2 Aussie Luke Neville who would have certainly helped us here so the question is – what are the Taipans going to do?

My money is on them releasing import Shane Edwards (Edwards played less than eight minutes in the Taipans' overtime loss to Sydney and is averaging 7.3 ppg at 35 per cent, 5.0 rebounds and not quite an assist per game) and chasing a centre like Aussie Julian Khazzouh - who is in limbo after a failed try out in the NBA.

Unfortunately, however, these basketball pros don’t play for free and the last thing the Snakes need is to put their finances back into a black hole. Not winning could do the same thing quicker however! Do it!

The other option is to go after a quality import big, but a bad fit could end our season. With a Khazzouh type player we know what to expect and I believe he will free up Tragardh to be more damaging around the basket – he would solve lots of problems for this squad.

The down side with Tragardh and Khazzouh playing together is it takes so much longer to write an article because it’s so freaking hard to spell their names! Let’s see what comes of it as I doubt no action will be taken...

Tips for Round 9

Perth vs Sydney – Perth by 12
NZ vs Melbourne – NZ by 12
TV vs Adelaide – TV by 2 (Yep I’m tipping the Crocs to get in the ‘W’ column)
Adelaide vs Sydney (Kings by 8)
Cairns vs Wollongong (Jury is out until I know the squads)

One or two more losses would mean the season is gone so let’s hope the Taipans’ hierarchy are planning something ‘BIG’!

Go Snakes...
