Chandra digs deep for Muddies Blue

Muddies Blue travelled to Fuller Park, which is becoming somewhat of a second home for the Muddies, to face an undefeated Innisfail team in a top of the table clash.

The Muddies lost the toss and were sent in to bat on what looked like a very green top pitch. With their usual openers not available due to work commitments, Ryan Thwaite and Sam Evans opened the batting and got off to a flyer with ten runs of the first over, with help from a lightning outfield.

Unfortunately, that didn’t last long as a mix up in running left Sam Evans run out for a duck. Ryan Thwaite lost his wicket to an LBW decision to finish on 24 leaving the Muddies 3 for 38.

In came Matt Chizzoniti who was playing some great cut shots, but again the Muddies' players were falling around him with the score 6 for 76. Chizzoniti was bowled with a great ball and fell for 26.

Sam Hodgson arrived from work in the nick of time to join Vikas Chandra at the crease and the pair put on a 45 run partnership with Hodgson making 27 before being caught out, leaving the Muddies Blue 8 for 135.

Chandra played with his usual flair bringing up a fantastic 50 with support from Dave Johnson with 12 not out. Chandra ended up out caught behind for 53 to leave the Muddies Blue all out for 167.

With a competitive score the Muddies had 15 overs to make a dent in Innisfail’s batting line up. A. Lucas opened the bowling and took a wicket on his third ball cleaned bowling middle stump. His very next over the same result happened to leave Innisfail 2 for 3.

Dave Johnson was bowling at the other end and the pair have been bowling brilliantly together all year, this time it was Lucas picking up the wickets.

Dave was unlucky not to pick one up with a dropped catch at point and a flying ball just over second slip's head. He finished with 0/32 off 5 overs.

The skipper decided to give new man to the club, Shane Gillespie, a go with the ball after seeing some great pace at training and he wasn’t disappointed with Gilly picking up his first wicket with a great caught and bowled to have figures of 1 for 2 off 2 overs.

Innisfail were now 4/50 and the last over of the day was given to Lucas. The Muddies had just broken a partnership of 32 when the devastating Lucas bowled another middle stump ball to leave Innisfail 5/58 chasing 167 for first innings points. Lucas finished with figures of 4/24 off 7.3 overs.

This game will go down to the wire as Innisfail’s tail has wagged in the past to get them over the line.

The winner of this game will sit at the top of the table in their division and this is something the Muddies have had in mind all season. They'll be fighting harder than ever to take these five wickets and remain undefeated.

This is Captain Simon Cody signing off.
