Newman: Deamalgamation not worthwhile

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has warned against deamalgamation due to the costs involved in the process.

Mr Newman told skynews.com.au that "It's not for the faint hearted...because the costs will not be worthwhile," however in the same report Local Government Minister David Crisafulli said he would not deter regions such as Douglas and Noosa from pursuing deamalgamation.

"The reason we're discussing this is because amalgamations were rushed through and there were guns pointed at the heads of local councils," Mr Crisafulli said

"It's not for me to tell local communities what's right for them."

The LNP promised to deliver on deamalgamation within their first 100 days of government, a promise re-elected Division 10 councillor Julia Leu expects them to live up to.

"I know many people at the polling booths asked 'Who supports deamalgamation?'

"This community expects the new state government to stick to that commitment that people voted for at the state election.

"I know that I'll be very strongly telling them to meet that commitment.

Cr Leu said her role will be to ensure the information required for residents to make an informed decision on deamalgamation is made available.

"This is one of my immediate post-election priorities. I want this community to have all the facts, positive and negative, before them when they make their decision."

In The Newsport article 'Manning, Smith launch bid for Div 10' (Tuesday 3 April 2012) newly elected Mayor Bob Manning made his position on the issue clear.

"I have talked to many people in Mossman, Port Douglas, and the Daintree and there is a great deal of dissatisfaction out there. It is no wonder they want to de-amalgamate from Cairns after the way they have been treated," he said.

"We will strive to make it (amalgamation) work and go the extra mile to make it work.

"If people still want to de-amalgamate we'll work to ensure it happens as smoothly as possible," Mr Manning said.

"From where I sit, as Mayor making amalgamation work will be a special project."

Mr Manning reaffirmed that message on Monday, telling The Newsport that Council will "work our hardest to make Division 10, as part of Cairns Regional Council, work. I've got a strong commitment to that."
