A commemorative service will be held at the Cairns Regional Council Mossman Administration Building to acknowledge National Sorry Day this Friday, May 25.

Council invites indigenous and non-indigenous members of the community to join together in recognition of the Stolen Generation and the true spirit of reconciliation.

The service will be at 10am and will include a Welcome to Country, speakers, flag-raising and a free morning tea. All are welcome to attend.

The themes of the service will be further explored during National Reconciliation Week next week.

“Reconciliation Week is a time to celebrate our nation’s indigenous cultures, to reflect upon past actions and to recognise the true spirit of reconciliation,” Mayor Bob Manning said.

“Cairns Regional Council continues to implement its Reconciliation Action Plan, which aims to assist in closing the gap that exists in employment, training, health and social wellbeing.”

Public forums addressing Reconciliation and what it means to people from the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and wider communities will be held at the Mossman Administration Building on Tuesday, May 29, from 10.30am to 12noon and Manunda Library on Thursday, May 31, from 10.30am to 12noon.
