Leu's induction speech

Julia Leu read her statement at the formation of the new Cairns Regional Council. Here's what the Division 10 councillor had to say.

It is an honour and privilege to be re-elected for a second term and to be a Councillor for such a beautiful and spectacular part of the planet. I am very much looking forward to the challenge of the new Council.

I want to be part of a Council that supports its distinctive communities, celebrates our indigenous heritage and cultural diversity, protects and treasures our natural environment and truly connects and engages with the community.

During this term I will be holding the State Government to their promise to allow the Douglas community to have a referendum on de-amalgamation and establishing a new Douglas Shire.

However, I want to stress that at the same time, as always I will continue to work proactively for all of Division 10 and the region, with a focus on economic development, projects that create jobs, increase tourism appeal and diversify our economy.

I want to ensure that Council has the types of programs, policies and a planning scheme that stimulates our economy and protects our natural environment and unique biodiversity. I believe that this can be achieved by fostering a practical and sustainable approach to managing the economic, social and environmental needs of the region.

Council must reflect the diversity and vibrancy of our region, collaborate, negotiate and communicate in an open, accountable and transparent manner so that the services and programs reflect community aspirations and expectations, while ensuring that future opportunities are not compromised.

Finally, I want to thank my amazing campaign team, all my supporters and the community who have put their faith in me to represent them for the next four years.
