Inside Port - Priceless, not worthless

by Carly Budgen

Volunteers play an important role in the day to day running of the Port Douglas Community Services Network (PDCSN).

Here at the PDCSN we have all different kinds of people who volunteer. There are the young and the old, all different nationalities and cultures plus everyone in between.

You will find smiling volunteers hard at work at the Neighbourhood Centre and the Nic Nak Shed, as well as the Cubby House day care centre, and the great budding Community Garden – all part of the PDCSN organisation.

Being a volunteer can have a very fulfilling role in your personal life as well as helping your community as a whole. It takes some very special people to volunteer, people who are willing to take time out of their own lives and lend a helping hand.

On Wednesday 18 April we at the PDCSN decided, as part of National Volunteer Week (not that we need an excuse), it was time to celebrate our volunteers new and old.

Have you checked out the region's best photo competition?

The staff decided we would hold a luncheon for our priceless volunteers. There was on offer a delicious array of curries, Asian salads and condiments followed by a refreshing lime pie (thanks staff and Port Douglas Catering).

Volunteers on the day were told they were not to assist in any way shape or form, which left some of them having to sit on their hands. As volunteers they certainly know the meaning of getting in and getting things done.

It was a wonderful time for the volunteers. Time to share a laugh, a meal and a long deserved catch up will their fellow volunteers. All while listening to the music of Port Douglas, our Community Garden CD.

The staff gave speeches on the day to cement the fact that volunteers ROCK as well as handing out certificates and vouchers for the Nic Nak Shed.

So if you are looking to become a volunteer in your local area it’s all about who you are, what you can bring to your local community and the time you have to share. It could be a business, a school or wherever your skills can take you.

If you are interested in volunteering  please contact the PDNC on 4099 5518

Volunteers aren't paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.
