Bulls bring shield to town

The Queensland Rail Bulls Masters will not be the only attraction for sport fans in far north Queensland this week - the Sheffield Shield is also set to visit the region.

Cricket Australia has loaned the historic shield to the Queensland Rail Bulls Masters for the duration of the tour, which will give the public in Cairns and Port Douglas the opportunity to share in the Queensland Bulls’ victory last season.

Chris Hartley, who made a century and guided the Bulls to victory over Tasmania in the Shield final, will escort the trophy as he makes his maiden tour with the Masters.

With Hartley included, there are now a total of ten players in the touring party who have been part of Sheffield Shield winning teams with Queensland.

Queensland Rail Bulls Masters managing director, Jimmy Maher, said he was ecstatic the team will have the opportunity to take the shield to his home region, the far north.

“To have one of the most well-known items in Australian sport travelling with us is a massive coup for the Queensland Rail Bulls Masters,” Maher said.

“Chris Hartley obviously played a huge part in the Bulls’ win, so it’s fantastic to have him there to be able to talk to the public about what it meant to hold the shield aloft this year.

“I remember when we toured with the Sheffield Shield after winning it for the first time in 1995; people just flocked to get a look at it, especially in regional Queensland.

“I think it means more for Queenslanders to see it because it took us so many years to win it for the first time.”
