Overcast skies couldn't cloud the enthusiasm of families at the Four Mile Beach Day on Saturday with hundreds of people flocking to be a part of the action.

The beach cricket competition was hotly contested by players of all ages with Actin Fitness Beach Cricket Team taking out the coveted Coconut-Thong-On Stick trophy and the $100 Ironbar voucher.

All eyes then turned to the skies to watch parachutes glide to their sandy target.

The Esplanade was closed off to allow pedestrians to cruise through the market stalls, and back on the beach creative thinkers turned Four Mile Beach into an impressive gallery of sand sculptures.

"I'm very happy with the Beach Day and very happy the whole lot," Carnivale general manager Ken Dobbs said.

"There was more (people) than last year I'm sure. When I went down there it was packed and everyone was having a ball.

"I thought the weather would have a negative impact but it was the other way around."

Mr Dobbs said AME's rodeo was also a raging success with around 2,000 people in attendance.

Attention now turns to Friday night for the running of the Carnivale Street Parade. Mr Dobbs said most float entrants have already confirmed their attendance after record rains forced a postponement from last Friday night.

"There is very few (entrants) that are not able to do it. The fireworks will be on and the very important things is the amusement rides will be back.

"When you think about it, it's the only time of the year those rides come to town - at Carnivale - and parents like to be able to give their kids that kind of entertainment."
