Cairns Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning will draw on his backyard cricket skills to lead the Mayor’s Magnificent Seven in this Saturday’s Port Douglas Carnivale Beach Cricket Challenge.

Cr Manning will be joined by six of CRC’s own cricketing stars, Sean Cooper, Rob Ritches, Brett Kilpatrick, Simeon Miglioranza, Dion Williams and Liz Collyer.

“I’ve always gone alright in the backyard, the beach shouldn’t be too different,” Cr Manning said.

“I like a challenge and it’s about having a bit of outdoor fun and our glorious coastline offers a spectacular backdrop. Why wouldn’t you join in?”

But Cr Manning said he expected a bit of rivalry at the crease.

“I don’t think we’ll be alone in wanting to win, there’ll no doubt be a bit of trash-talk, all in good fun, of course.”

The sporting action will start at 9am with the final to be played by midday.

The beach cricket tournament will be part of Beach Day on final weekend of Port Douglas Carnivale.

Other activities include a sand castle competition, treasure hunts and markets.

Cairns Regional Council will have its own market stand, giving away free native plants to residents.

“We have 10 different species of plants to choose from, including assorted palms, bottle brush, beach lilies, and edge plants,” Division 10 councillor Leu said.

“They are all native to the area, so they are suitable to the local climate and soil.

“We’ll also have copies of the brand new Cycling and Walking Guide maps of Port Douglas and Mossman and lots of giveaways for the kids.

“Carnivale is a wonderful time to be in Port Douglas and to celebrate what makes our town unique,” she said.

The Council marquee will be on the Esplanade foreshore from 8am to 2pm.
