20th anniversary of the Mabo Day celebration
The Cairns Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community will be remembering the great Eddie Koiki Mabo.
Celebration for “Mabo Day” will commence on Friday June 1 to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Mabo High Court decision. Again this year, there will be activities held over five days.
The story of Eddie Mabo has been described as "a modern day, David versus Goliath story that is worth celebrating by not only Indigenous people, but all the people of Australia”.
In collaboration with Umi Arts and Reuse & Recycle Cairn Inc and the 2012 Mabo Committee, a family movie night will be part of a mini “Umi got Talent” festival and World Environment Day to celebrate the 20th Anniversary year, indigenous arts, talents, food and the environment.
Mabo Day Committee chairperson Rick Phinesa expects to see 3000 people taking part in celebration over the five days.
Everyone is welcome to all activities to celebrate this memorable occasion.
