Roundabout, shelter back on agenda
The construction of a roundabout at the notorious intersection of Captain Cook Highway and Port Douglas Road will be delivered if the LNP is elected to government, according to Cook candidate, David Kempton.
The intersection saw an increased number of vehicle accidents last year, in which locals and tourists alike were injured, some seriously.
Mr Kempton said there had been no major infrastructure project on Douglas for many years and the roundabout would be a priority.
“With a state debt of $85 billion there are going to be limited funds available however to show the LNP commitment to Douglas we will construct a roundabout on the Cook Highway intersection, and provide a gateway to the towns of Port Douglas and Mossman,” he said.
“The LNP will also construct safe and navigable boat ramps and in the Douglas region to ensure local and tourists alike have safe access for fishing and recreation.”
Mr Kempton said issues that affected Port Douglas, such as de-amalgamation from Cairns Regional Council, the stalled Port Douglas waterfront development and the proposed evacuation centre were still urgent.
“De-amalgamation is still a burning issue,” Mr Kempton said.
“The LNP will support a referendum on de-amalgamation to the people the old Douglas Shire within 100 days, and with this will come a review of the planning laws.
“The waterfront development should have been completed by now, yet it remains in limbo due to lack of funding and bureaucratic red tape.
“I will support the waterfront development and work with the community to be sure it is not lumbered with another mistake.
“And the Port Douglas cyclone shelter debacle saw the locals being ignored in the selection of a site and the nature of the building. If possible, at this late stage, the LNP will revisit the site selection and building purpose in consultation with the community.”
