Local art needs new lease on life

Community art in Port Douglas has hit hard times of late with the closure of Port Douglas Community Arts Inc, and now a popular children's arts service needs a new home.

Davvyd Brown has been running classes for six years, the last five at Meridien Marina, but with changing circumstances at the Marina Davvyd is looking for a new space to teach his students.

"The marina was fantastic and paid for the kids lessons on Saturday mornings, but towards the end (they) halved the fee paid to me," Davvyd said.

"It was a great shame because it created atmosphere and trade. The parents sat and had coffee or breakfast and also sometimes lunch. They knew the benefit of the overflow and it was fantastic for the kids and me too."

Davvyd is proud that some of his students have gone on to undertake further studies in art at university, and would like other kids to have the same opportunities.

"It's a wonderful service lost if I can't get a backer for these lessons," he said.

"It was great for the kids and adults. We have some talented artists in Port and sadly none have a venue anymore."

He remains hopeful that a local business or individual will come to the rescue to ensure his colourful classes continue.

"What I do is educational and adds lots of colour to a sadly dimming Port Douglas. We need all the help and razzmatazz we can get."

Davvyd, better known to some as "The Birdman," is also keen to continue greeting visitors to the town with his personable cockatoos. Again, however, he needs the support of local businesses to make it happen.

"My photos with Henry (his most famous Cockatoo) were sent worldwide and is a permanent reminder of their visit to Port.

You only had to look at the response, laughter and people in awe of my incredible critters. Once these and other mad antics are lost this town will lose its charm," he said.
