First up win for junior basketballers

It was an exciting moment for these Mossman/Port Douglas junior basketballers as they had their first ever competitive hit out on Friday night in the Mulgrave competition.

Coach and organiser Steve Hull (pictured) enrolled the boys into the Cairns competition near Smithfield to give these guys a taste of the real thing as part of their development.

Whilst official games are still a work in progress locally, Steve said the opportunity to jump into Mulgrave was too good to refuse.

"Most kids start playing at age ten and while we get our local comp sorted I thought this would be invaluable experience for them."

After bracing his young men with advice on how to compete against other more organised kids, Steve was philosophical.

"I didn’t know what to expect and I didn’t know if we could even score, I just wanted the boys to learn and enjoy themselves."

What eventually happened was an 18 – 2 win with the boys whipping their more favoured opponents.

Well done to Kalipo Tusa, Ethan Crees, Tiger Wallace, Bailey Ingram, Dylan Collyer, Joe Tusa and Luke Hull.

"What makes it most impressive is the other side had two under 12 Mulgrave reps in it but the boys need not get too ahead of themselves as there is lots of work still to be done," Steve said

Great job boys and good luck this week!
