Earth Hour tomorrow night
Earth Hour 2012 is expected to be the darkest yet after more than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries around the world switched off their lights for Earth Hour last year.
The initiative, which takes place this Saturday night at 8.30, raises awareness of the need for climate change action and is being supported by one of Port Douglas' most famous establishments.
Earth hour started five years ago in Sydney with 2.2 million residents and 2,100 businesses participating.
Executive Director and Co-Founder of Earth Hour, Andy Ridley, said the world’s leading organisations are sending a clear signal that they are committed to doing more to protect the planet.
“The collective impact of these organisations who are lending support to Earth Hour this year is immense. Imagine the possibilities when this impact is translated into action beyond the hour.”
After winning the 2011 Queensland Hotels Association Awards for Excellence for Best Environmental Practice, the Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas Resort will turn out the lights and is planning a special event of fashion, feasts, and fire dancers to celebrate.
