Demolition to commence

The transformation of the Port Douglas waterfront is about to get underway with several buildings between the Combined Club and the Sugar Wharf to be demolished.

Council is calling tenders for the removal of buildings at 1, 3 and 5 Ashford Avenue, which when completed aims to create additional public open space alongside Dickson Inlet.

"In keeping with the Port Douglas Master Plan vision, these works will create the start of a "walkable waterfront" and offer unobstructed public access to the water's edge," a statement from Council read.

"It is Council's intention to retain all significant trees and all works will be programmed to avoid disturbance around key events including not allowing weekend work."

It is estimated that the first stage of the demolition and site remediation works will be completed late June 2012 with the site returned to open grassed areas available for the general public to access.
