Challenge Cairns no more

Challenge Cairns will be renamed Ironman Cairns after the recent acquisition of USM EVENTS by World Triathlon Corporation.

Competitors will also be able to use the event as a qualifier for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

In addition to some of the professional triathletes who competed in the inaugural Challenge Cairns in 2011 such as Belinda and Justin Granger, Tim Berkel, Matt White, and eventual winner Chris
McCormack, other elite competitors have signed up for Ironman Cairns 2012.

These include the likes of Cameron Brown, Scott Neyedli, Karina Ottosen, Luke Bell, Petr Vabrousek, and Jimmy Johnsen.

The event will take place as scheduled on June 3, 2012.  Cairns Airport remains the major sponsor of the race which offers a 100,000 EUR professional prize purse and additionally, 40 Ironman World
Championship qualifying slots will be available for age group athletes.

“We are excited by the opportunity to bring the Ironman experience to one of the World’s most beautiful destinations," said Daryl Herbert, Managing Director of USM Events.

"The Cairns Airport Adventure Festival showcases Tropical North Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef like no other event in the world.”
