A rugby league game to be held at Mossman Showgrounds between Mossman-Port Douglas and Brothers on Saturday night was cancelled at the request of Brothers' president Bob Mulley, over concerns the field's lighting did not meet regulations.

The move, which could have far reaching implications for other events to be held at the venue at night, was made with players' welfare in mind, according to Mr Mulley, when he approached the match referee to have the game called off.

Occupational Health and Safety regulations require amateur sport lighting to maintain a minimum of 100 lux for a match to proceed, and a minimum 90 lux for training.

Queensland Rugby League's local administrator, Pat Bailey, said she had been oblivious to the fact the Mossman Showgrounds lights did not meet standards.

"I got a phone call late Saturday afternoon from the Brothers' president saying there was a problem. Up until then I wasn't aware there was a problem because there hadn't been a complaint put in regarding the lights."

She said the Cairns District Rugby League would need to look into whether other venues comply with requirements but is confident they do.

"Apart from Cairns District Junior Rugby League, all grounds are leased from Council, or they're Council owned grounds.

"Whether that's in their lease whether the quality of the lights (meets standards) is up to the club. It might be a different lease on every one of those home grounds."

She said clubs have a duty of care to ensure they provide a safe environment for their players, and referees can make decisions to stop play where they see fit.

"If you're having a game of football and there's lightning and thunder the referee can call it off. That's the same if there's excess flooding, and exactly the same if there's a lighting problem."

Ms Bailey said she has addressed the issue of lighting with Cairns Regional Council and expects the problem to be rectified by this weekend's fixtured match.

"These grounds have got shows coming up in a couple of weeks and I would have believed they'd have their lights up to date for that.

"The game (against Brothers) will be rescheduled...I can see it will be played up at Mossman, maybe mid-week, as long as the lights are up to scratch.

"Mossman have a game this weekend so those lights would have to be corrected before the referee would allow that game to go ahead."

Ms Bailey said she believed the issue was a number of bulbs were missing and required replacement, however, one reader who contacted The Newsport said the problem could be far more significant and that replacing the globes would still not bring the ground up to scratch.

According to Ms Bailey, of great concern is players injured during the course of a game would not be covered by insurance where playing conditions do not meet regulations.

"Definitely not. The onus is then on the club who provided the venue. That's when there could be serious consequences for the club."

The Newsport was unable to contact a Cairns Regional Sport and Recreation representative for comment.
