Schmidt on fire at Mossman

by Steve Cruickshank

Saturday saw a small contingent of local shooters turn up for a 500 metre double range shoot.

We welcomed back Ron Schilds after his open heart surgery three weeks before, taking on the scoring role.

First up on the mound was Norbert Schmidt who opened with two low sighters. He cut them and went on to shoot a very impressive 59/2 out of a possible 60 in this first 500 metre F class competition.

Neil Attwood was next up in the Full bore (manually supported with peep sights) competition opening with a 3 and a V bull. He cut the first and kept the V bull and went on to shoot a string of 5s and 4s, with another V bull and a 3 to finish with a mediocre score of 42/2 out of a possible 50.

Next was Steve Cruickshank shooting in F Class where the rifle is mechanically supported with telescopic sights making sighting very easy and there is no need to holding the rifle. Squeezing the trigger is all that's required as the rifle is supported at the front and at the rear.

Steve opened with a 5 and a 4 as sighters. He opted to cut them and then went on to shoot a mediocre 48/1 from 60, blaming heat waves on the target.

Last down was Rick Mischlewski. Rick has been away from the range a while and opened with a 3 and a 4 as sighters. He cut these shots and went on to shoot a fairly good score with a mixed bag of 4s, 5s and V bulls giving him a score of 46/2 out of a possible  50 in this Full bore competition.

In the second 500 metre range, Norbert was back on the range in this F Class comp. He opened with a 5 and a 6, opting to cut the 5 and he went on to shoot a very credible score again of 65/5 out of 66. Norbert was showing fine form in these very trying heat wave, mirage conditions.

Neil was back again opening with a 3 and a 4, cutting them both and going on to shoot a much better round with a string of 4s, 5s and one super V bull to give him a score of 50/1 out of 55.

Steve was next on the mound opening with two 4s. He gave the call to cut them and he went on to post a mediocre round with only one bulls eye giving him a score of 53/1 out of 66.

Last down was Rick in the Full bore competition. Rick opened with a 4 and a 5. He cut the 4 and went on to shoot a pretty average round with only 2 V Bulls giving Rick a score of 48/2 out of 55.

The final scores for the 500 double shoot were Rick Mischlewski in first place with 94/4 out of 105 followed by Neil Attwood with 92/3 out of 105. In the F Class comp, Norbert Schmidt finished in first place with a total score of 124/7 out of 126 followed by Steve Cruickshank with 101/2 out of 126.

In summary, a good day was had by all and I would like to thank our Marker. Our next shoot will be this Saturday at 1pm on the Cook Highway half way between Mossman and Port Douglas Interested visitors are most welcome to come and watch or participate in this great sport.
