Party time!

The most popular event of Port Douglas Carnivale is finally upon us, albeit a week later than anticipated.

As usual, the community has stepped up to the plate with more than 40 floats registered to participate including regular entrants the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre.

The Neighbourhood Centre's Tanya Morris said the parade is as much about friendship as it is the colours and sounds of the event.

"It's the togetherness. It's the real social aspect of getting together as a team. We're having about 20 people three times a week to work on it (the float) from all walks of life.

"People even come up from the Gold Coast to work on it. Everybody works really hard and puts their heart and soul into it," Tanya said.

While their final design is still a well kept secret, you can expect the Reef to be a prominent feature of the float which is made entirely from recycled material.

"We're showcasing the environment, the work of the locals. We'll have all ages so make sure you give us a shout and sing the song, it's a song that everybody knows," she said.

Tonight's parade will illuminate the various takes on the theme 'Heavenly Bodies' in this the year of the much anticipated total solar eclipse.

Parade organiser Lisa Whalen said anticipation is building throughout the community and the parade will be a sight to remember.

"We're really excited about the number of floats. We've got 45 and we're looking forward to everyone's interpretations of heavenly bodies."

She said that despite the recent run of overcast skies, there is no reason for the weather to put a dampner on the event.

"Don't let the weather put you off. Come and have some fun on the streets."

If you can't make it to Macrossan Street you can still feel part of the action. Radio Port Douglas will be broadcasting the parade and The Newsport's own Kerry Larsen will be calling the action from the Court House Hotel.
