Junior Crocs feel at home

Under 8

In full winter sunshine the mighty Port Douglas Crocs produced one of their finest performances this year up against the Cairns Saints at the Croc pit on Sunday.

For the first time this year coach Matt Scott had 11 little crocs at his disposal. Game day captain Kia ”Kelly” Durie was outstanding right from the opening bounce with many linking handballs and long kicks into the forward line.

Daniel ”King” Harrington excelled in his new role up forward and was well assisted by the busy Hayden ”Hams” Creswell who proudly displayed his new West Coast Eagles jumper before the game.

Highlights of the match were the first game performances for Taj who is a mad keen Geelong fan and played very much like his hero Jimmy Bartel, and the much improved Dalton ”Shane Tuck” Wall who had been training the house down for three months and played an impressive game much to the delight of the home crowd.

Zippy rover Kalan ”Callanin” Poole was everywhere with his little handballs and even competed well in the ruck. Inspired by meeting his idol last week Colby ”Dane Swan” Taylor was in everything and causing many headaches for the Saints.

Down back Sam ”Richo” Wall was a mountain of strength with many rebounding long kicks and was well assisted by his partner in crime Tam ”Hunt” Neguyen.

The blond bombshell Hugo ”Crawford” Ellison was deadly in front of goals, while Angus ”Matera” Van Rouylan marked strongly across the ground.

Coach’s awards went to Hugo, Taj, Dalton and Angus. Special mention to Daniel and Tam who helped out with player numbers with the Saints.

Another fast paced game on home turf this week – this time against Cairns Saints.  All team members played strongly with Jake, Slade, Harry, Scott and Jamie showing great pace and defensive skills.

Ethan, Jacob, Anthony, Dean and Casey also ran hard to keep in front of the Saints.  The Under 10s are coming together as we approach the business end of the season.

Goal kickers were Anthony Long (3), Casey West (2) and Jacob Rich (1).  Awards went to Harry Walker, Jamie Hudson, Jake Sherwell and Dean Laurence and this week’s medal recipient was Casey West.

Needing a win to keep finals aspirations alive we got off to a great start into the breeze. Quarter time saw us a goal in front with all boys putting in well and displaying good skills.

By half time we were a big chance of a win with Brayden Charlie and Hugo all winning good ball through the middle but kicking points rather goals.

Three Quarter time saw us two goals down but with the wind at our backs. Lions turned up the heat and out-played our boys to run out five goal winners.

Chin up boys, keep trying.

For the first time in weeks we had almost our best side in and we needed it as we were up against the Saints who are currently holding first spot on the ladder.

Showing a lot of character and playing with some good old fashioned guts and determination there was nothing in it at three quarter time, but midway through the last quarter the Saints were able to kick three quick goals and we were unable to respond.

Jack Samson was solid at fullback and was supported well by Huddsy and Pidge in the pockets keeping things tight. Back flankers Olli and Hugo played great defensive games also managing a few runs up the ground.

In the centre Finn and Tom were putting their bodies in for the hard balls and always, along with Jarrah, turned up when needed.

Quinny was back and played a great running game linking up with Jack Dickson on numerous occasions. Ben Shrimpton continued his good form working hard on the wing as did Brent on the other wing.
Jack Laurin and Angus got plenty of ball and Angus tackled everything that moved. Tully was able to find space, marking well and with some good second efforts got some ball forward to Sol, Harry and Jye.

Brady, playing from the bench, added a bit of spark to the forwards and was a bit unlucky a couple of times. Daniel was playing with confidence making a couple of great tackles before being injured and having to leave the ground.

A big thanks again to Charlie and Ben from the Under 12s for helping us out, they certainly hold their own.

Score 7.4.46 to 3.5.21

Goals: Jack Laurin, Angus Dickson, Jack Dickson
Awards: Ben Shrimpton, Jack Laurin, Jarrah Wren, Jack Hudson
