It's a dog’s life
The vital services provided by local community organisation Paws and Claws are presently benefiting eleven dogs at their Craiglie kennels.
And as always demand for their services means resources remain stretched according to Paws and Claws' Bianca Maguire.
"We're always full. It's very rare that we have a few spare kennels for strays," Ms Maguire said.
Dogs are brought in by the pound that have been picked up and not claimed by their owners, Paws and Claws take on occasional cruelty cases, and commonly pets are dropped off by people who are relocating from the area and are, for one reason or another, unable to take their animals with them.
The support of the community goes a long way toward ensuring Paws and Claws can continue their outstanding work.
Aside from monetary donations, pet food can be given via a food bin at IGA Port Douglas, people can become members of Paws and Claws, volunteer time helping in the kennels or participating in the innovative program 'Paw Buddies.'
"The purpose of the Paw Buddy scheme is to get them out and about, get a bit of personalised attention and some basic training. It's very popular," Ms Maguire said.
"You can come in and take them out for walks, you can take them home, take them camping for the weekend. It's like owning your own dog without owning the dog."

Of course, pet adoption is the name of the game, and those in need of a companion can choose a de=sexed, vaccinated, and micro-chipped pooch for $275, or feline friend for $154.
Paws and Claws are continuing their efforts to build a new shelter in Craiglie and sourcing funding remains a focus.
Their annual Charity Golf Day at Sea Temple Golf Club is a key date in their fundraising calendar.
Held on Sunday 15 July, the Ambrose event includes 18 holes of golf, bacon and egg muffin at registration, BBQ lunch, and beer, wine and soft-drink on course and with lunch all for just $125 per player.
