Inside Port - Cancer support

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea at Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre

Great cakes were not all the folks who joined in Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre’s Biggest Morning Tea this May enjoyed. With over 30 people attending there was a great atmosphere of support, positivity and community at this annual Centre fundraiser for the Cancer Council.

The group was uplifted by the presence of Mandy Stone who shared her journey as a cancer carer, and emphasised the importance of maintaining regular check-ups for early detection.

Mandy was pleased to hear that the Centre’s visiting Women’s Health Service (which attends Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre once a month on Mondays) has been regularly booked out by locals.  Men too were encouraged to attend their GPs for regular check-ups.

The presence of members from Pink in the Tropics our local breast cancer support group which also meets monthly at the Neighbourhood Centre was also a highlight of the morning.

By joining in this annual fundraiser across the nation for the Cancer Council, all participants enjoyed being part of something bigger - assisting in a small way the Cancer Council which provides much needed support.

Most people know someone who has been affected by cancer. The Cancer Council runs a Helpline 131120 which provides free and confidential information on all aspects of cancer.

It also funds accommodation for cancer patients, their families and carers during treatment, and ground-breaking research into new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer.

For more information on Cancer Council Services call 1300 656 585 or visit www.cancer.org.au. Pink in the Tropics can be contacted via the Neighbourhood Centre on 4099 5518.

Appointments for the Free Women’s Health Clinic can also be made by contacting the Neighbourhood Centre on 4099 5518.
