“And The Big Men Fly.” a play by Allan Hopgood is set to celebrate its 50th year anniversary in 2013 and its subject matter is as relevant today as it was when it was written.

The Douglas Theatre Arts Group will perform this work in June and July. The play highlights the world of Australian Rules Football and illustrates the folly of human beings chasing ambition, status and money. It is a story of Greed vs Integrity.

“And The Big Men Fly” is a comedy. The Crows are a football team which haven't seen much success. In fact they haven't won a game for a considerable time, let alone a premiership.

Their players are not much good and they need to find some new talent. Coach JJ Forbes sends his assistant Wally out into the country to un-earth some new players.

Unfortunately Wally doesn't manage to find anyone. On the way back to the city his car breaks down near the farm of Achilles (Acky) Jones. Acky is a typical country farmer who likes the farm work, has no real interest in the outside world but he has the ability to drop kick full wheat bags across the shed with his bare feet.

As far as Acky is concerned this "beats carrying them". To Wally Acky is a "Greek God" who can win the Crows a premiership. If only Acky can be convinced to play football.

Australian Rules Football has been played for well over a century. It is believed that the first games may have been played around 1853 in the Victorian Goldfields.

Director Jack Heywood will tackle this enormous play with his usual inventive manner presenting stage craft unlike the plays of the last few years. Using his skill and experience he has designed a performance of the play unseen in our community theatre in the past. The topic is a comedic goldmine.

Runs from 13 - 29 July with nine shows scheduled over three weekends.
